Sublimation Paper, How to Choose the Right Weight?

People are quite accustomed to classify the sublimation paper by it’s size or weight. The common size of sublimation paper are:24”,36”,44”,63”and 64”.Of course, people can customize the size as they need. Today, we will mainly discuss the how to choose the correct weight of sublimation paper.

The gram of sublimation paper means the weight of per square meter, common gram are 45gsm, 50gsm, 55gsm, 60gsm, 70gsm, 75gsm,80gsm, 90gsm, 100gsm, 120gsm… Or we can simply divide them into to types: low weight and heavy weight .Then how to choose the right sublimation paper weight？

1. The amount of ink loading.

Ink loading is related with the water absorption by the paper. The higher the ink loading, the heavier the paper has to be, in order to accept the moisture from the sublimation ink without any printing problem.

Sometimes, the images you print are not complicate and colorful, so the amount of ink loading is low, and you can choose the low weight sublimation paper. But if the image you print is complete and colorful, the amount of ink loading will be high, and you’d better choose the heavy weight sublimation paper.

2. Roll to roll or roll to sheet

When the printed paper is processed from the roll in a transfer calendar , it is better to use the light weight paper.

3. The humidity of the printing environment

When the humidity is low (under 45% RH), you’d better choose 75gsm paper. Because the paper will shrink in a low humidity, and 75gsm is thinner and softer, it will relieve the wrinkle.

When the humidity is higher than 70% RH, the thicker paper100gsm, 120gsm will work better than thinner paper, because the paper is very easy to become damp in a high humidity.

4. The print speed

The low weight sublimation paper is suitable for high speed printers, because it can avoid the crimping of the paper. And if you use low weight sublimation paper for ordinary printers, the ink will easily permeate the paper. Besides, high speed print usually doesn’t pursuit the high quality, use the low weight paper can save the cost.
