What's the difference between  sublimation paper and heat transfer paper?

sublimation printing

To understand the difference between the two types of paper, it’s important to understand the processes involved in utilizing the paper types. Sublimation is the process of changing physical states from a solid to a gas while bypassing the liquid phase. With sublimation printing, the inks vaporize when exposed to high temperatures. When heated, the ink turns to a gas and actually embeds itself into the polyester garment you are creating. Sublimation paper is a paper that is specifically manufactured to absorb the sublimation ink, but also releases the ink once heat is applied. This fast release of the inks allows transfers to retain the high detail and vibrant color sublimation printing is known for.

The heat transfer process is a little bit different. During production, a design is printed on heat transfer paper and then pressed on top of a garment using a heat press or standard high-heat iron. With this method of garment decoration, the design actually sits on top of the garment as opposed to becoming part of the garment, like with sublimation. Standard heat transfer paper is generally crafted with a layer of polymer on top. When pressing your garments, that polymer layer releases along with the ink or toner, depending on your type of printer, onto your fabric, leaving you with the transferred image.

It's also important to know that there are different types of heat transfer paper available for both textiles and hard surfaces. The differences between the types come down to the polymer used when manufacturing the paper. Textile-compatible papers use alternative types of polymers to make sure they will properly adhere to the designated surface or garment. Sublimation paper, however, can be used across all surfaces and textiles. For example, you do not need one type of paper to sublimate mugs and a different type of paper to sublimate T-shirts.

It's good to note that both types of paper require different temperatures to work correctly. Sublimation paper generally requires higher temperatures (upwards of 400 degrees F) to ensure the ink releases properly. There are standard heat transfer papers for laser printers that transfer at lower temps (some down to 250–300 degrees F) so they can adhere successfully to certain textiles. If you're ever in doubt about which temperatures are best to use for pressing your project, always consult the instructions included with your sublimation paper or heat transfer paper purchase.
