What Common Problems Can be Seen in Sublimation Printing?(2)
Last time, we talked about the 2 common problems in sublimation printing: banding and moisture issues. Now, let’s talk about the another 3 problems.
1. Ghosting & Gassing Out
As we all know that when it is in transfer, heat press surface, transfer paper and surface of substrate must be close, can not have the gaps, otherwise it will make the transferred graphics blur.
The key to solve this problems is how to keep the transfer paper and the substrate close tightly. There are some solutions:
First, use heat resistant tape to secure the transfer to the product. Use care not to tape across the image area as this can often damage the image quality. In addition, use only a minimal amount of tape, as you will need to be able to easily and quickly remove the transfer after pressing.
Second, if you are sublimating the garment, you can use “repositionable” spray adhesive instead of tape. Apply a very light mist on the image side of the transfer paper from about 12-18" away. Do not spray the shirt. Then press the transfer paper to the product. If you position it incorrectly, you can lift it off and reposition it.
2. The Color is Not Correct after Transfer Printing
Sometimes you will find that the output color is not the color you want, why? This is mainly because of the image rendering equipment. Different image rendering equipment has different methods and ranges of color management.
We usually suggest our customers use the RIP program, which provides very precise tools for managing color and controlling production.
3. Transfer Lines On Apparel
Transfer lines are where you end up with a faint line in the fabric that corresponds to where the edges of the transfer sheet were located during pressing. They are caused by the shirt fibers melting along the edges of the transfer sheet. If you are an Embroiderer, transfer lines look kind of like hoop marks, except they are permanent!
First, adjust the heat press machine settings, turn the temperature to 385oF and reducing the pressure to a very light setting. You can also shorten the time from 60’ to 30’. But remember, you should do an experiment in advance, and find the most suitable settings.
Second, Many Sublimators use a process that utilizes a sheet of high temperature foam during production to prevent lines from forming. Vapor Apparel produces a turn-key kit complete with instructions and a YouTube video to explain the process. It can be purchased from any of their Distributors.
It is not horrible to meet problems in sublimation printing, the horrible place is that you never try to solve the problems even you meet them. We must know, the process of technology’s development is also the process of solving all kinds of problems. So , never afraid to meet troublesome.
